Module 1 will give you an essential introduction to English language teaching. You’ll learn frequently used terms and discover what makes the English language so unique. We’ll take a journey through the history of ELT methods and explore the most recent approaches, with a strong focus on Communicative Language Teaching (CLT).

You’ll also learn about L1 and L2 learning, and what the key differences are between learning a first language and a second language. We’ll cover what influences L2 learning (motivation, age, culture, learning preferences, etc.) along with highly effective L2 learning strategies.

In this module, we’ll dive into grammar teaching and why it’s so important to begin your course with this topic. We’ll explore the importance of metalanguage, comprehensible communication, and acceptability when teaching grammar.

To help you understand the basics of grammar, we’ll explore the nine word classes (parts of speech) in detail and explain what they are. Additionally, you’ll learn about the twelve verb tenses in an all-tenses chart with examples of usage, which will help you teach grammar more effectively.

We’ll explore the essential skills needed to become an EFL teacher, starting with an introduction to the ACCREDITAT Code of Practice for Teachers which outlines the professional standards for EFL teachers.

We’ll delve into the concept of a growth mindset and how it can be used to encourage language learning and acquisition inside and outside the classroom. As an EFL teacher, you’ll need to understand learners' and teachers' expectations of each other and the different roles you may need to take on in the classroom.

Finally, we’ll introduce you to the basics of lesson planning, which is a vital skill for every EFL teacher. We’ll cover the 5 Step Lesson Plan, before exploring it further in Module 8.

We’ll start by discussing motivation and its key elements, including intrinsic versus extrinsic motivation.

We’ll also explain the relationship between motivation and language learning and how to recognize a motivated learner. You’ll learn how to influence and drive learner motivation using techniques such as personalization, authentic materials, and gamification.

The VAK Learner Preferences Questionnaire is an essential tool that we’ll introduce. We’ll also discuss the Plateau Effect and provide guidance on how to help learners who may be stuck on a plateau.

This module provides a comprehensive overview of English grammar and how to teach it. We’ll start by exploring the similarities and differences between English grammar and grammar in other languages to give you a better understanding of how to teach English grammar to speakers of other languages.

We’ll show you how to make an effective grammar presentation using inductive and deductive presentations, and introduce you to reliable reference materials you can access whenever you need help with English grammar.

In Module 6, we’ll explore some challenging elements of the English language. We’ll start by discussing phonological and phonemic awareness, and providing activities to help learners develop these skills.

Next, we’ll cover lexis and its importance in language teaching. Then, you’ll learn how to select relevant and appropriate vocabulary and how to present vocabulary using activities and exercises.

At the end of the module, we’ll discuss the appropriateness of language and cultural contextualization, emphasizing that the same piece of speech in one society’s culture may not be considered appropriate in another.

We’ll cover how to teach listening, speaking, writing, and reading skills, using the 5 Step Lesson Plan to structure your lessons effectively.

In Module 8, we’ll focus on superior lesson planning and lesson delivery, which is arguably the most important teaching skill of all.

We’ll cover lesson objectives and goals, including smart objectives and various types of lesson objectives. You’ll learn about the purpose and principles of lesson planning, and we’ll delve deeper into the 5 Step Lesson Plan.

In addition, we’ll cover controlled and uncontrolled exercises and activities, and how to follow your lesson plan but adapt it in real time if necessary.

In this module, we’ll cover a range of topics to help you become a more effective EFL teacher. You’ll learn how to use the board effectively, elicit responses from students, check their understanding of concepts, and give instructions effectively.

We’ll also cover feedback and correction, including the importance of constructive feedback, different types of feedback, and how to correct written errors.

We will provide an introduction to teaching English online, including how to present online classes to younger learners and make effective use of materials when teaching English online.

We’ll start by exploring how classroom management is about organizing and controlling what goes on in the class to build an enjoyable and effective learning environment.

You’ll learn which materials and equipment are needed to set up your classroom for your first day, both for a traditional classroom and an online classroom.

Positive reinforcement will be discussed as the modern approach to classroom management, and we’ll provide strategies for minimizing or preventing discipline issues.

While it’s impossible to cover everything about teaching young learners in one module, we’ll focus on the key issues that will significantly benefit you when teaching young learners.

We’ll cover the key differences between younger and older young learners, how to approach teaching grammar and lexis, and how to teach young learners listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.

We’ll also cover how to assess young learners, including self- and peer-assessment, portfolios, project work, and dialogue journals. In addition, you’ll learn what makes a good story, how to choose a good storybook, and how to construct a storybook plan for your learners to follow.
